Your Voice Matters
Join us as we speak up for Library Advocacy in Albany on Wednesday, February 27th
CDLC members are encouraged to join MVLS, SALS, and UHLS Member Library staff, trustees, Friends, and patrons of all ages for Library Advocacy Day. Our goal is to help legislators understand how much people care about libraries by packing their offices at every appointment. Your voice matters and your attendance can make a BIG impact. Join us for meetings with your NYS representatives in Albany to support for NYLA's 2019 Budgetary and Legislative Priorities.
Budgetary Priorities

$200 Million for Statewide Library Aid
Guarantee Equity for All

Fighting Information Inequity

Connecting New Yorkers to trustworthy information resources
Building Sustainable Communities
$75 Million for Library Capital Infrastructure Improvements

Local public libraries require immediate, significant state investment to accommodate advances in IT infrastructure and energy efficient technologies, and to increase accessibility for all patrons.
Libraries Count: Census 2020
$40 Million for Library-Based Complete Count Initiatives

Statewide, at least 18% of households lack internet access and 25% of households earning less than $50k annually, use their local public library as their primary point of internet access. With the 2020 census being conducted mainly online for the first time, this threatens to result in a catastrophic undercount of NYS populations.

The NYLA initiative recommends funding for cybersecurity measures, support for staff resources, and IT infrastructure investments to ensure a complete count for NYS. An undercount places our state budget & federal representation at risk.
Legislative Priorities
Equal Access to School Libraries and Librarians
This legislation provides a guarantee that all students have access to a quality school library staffed by a certified NYS School Library Media Specialist.

Transparent Contracting with Educational Institutions
This legislation requires open, transparent contracting between educational institutions and corporate vendors of educational resources, so education is more affordable, and information more accessible.

Universal Access to Construction Aid Program
This legislation maintains robust state oversight of the Public Library Construction Aid Program while adding a 90/10 matching provision for qualifying capital projects.
And don't forget to make use of the NYLA Online Advocacy Center to send a message to your legislators TODAY - no need to wait to speak up! As a bonus, find at least two other library supporters in your community to do the same and amplify your efforts. Every point of contact with each legislator really matters!
