Meeting Notes

Beth Bouloukos, Senior Editor at Lever Press discussed  Lever Press’ new libraries-driven publishing model for open access humanities monographs.

Lever Press is a new academic press founded by liberal arts college libraries. Several years ago librarians who belong to the Oberlin Group agreed to address the crisis in the publishing of scholarly monographs by pooling resources to create a new academic press with a different business model in line with the values and ethos of liberal arts colleges. Library heads agreed to a joint venture with the University of Michigan and Amherst College Press. All the projects will be peer reviewed and will be available open access. You can read more here https://www.leverpress.org/history/.

Works will be published on Fulcrum, an emerging digital publishing platform built in the open source Hydra/Fedora software framework with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, providing a venue for research publication that treats all forms of digital objects equally and richly integrates narratives with associated data (images, videos, audio files, visualizations, etc.). This will mean that titles are discoverable by, and accessible to, the widest possible audience, while being sustainable into the digital future.

Beth Bouloukos, Senior Acquisition Editor of the Amherst College Press and the Lever Press, received her doctorate from Cornell University where she researched Latin American literature, film, and culture through a feminist lens. Before beginning at Amherst College and Lever Presses, she acquired books in education, Latin American/Latinx studies, and gender and sexuality studies at SUNY Press for seven years. She is particularly interested in projects that link theory to praxis and that give a platform to historically marginalized voices. She has also served as a visiting assistant professor at Fairfield University and the University at Albany, SUNY.
